Chapter 7

The small living room was filled with silence as I stared dumbfounded at the boy who was

slumped over on my couch. "Naomi?" I said cautiously. My friend stood behind the sofa,

clutching the small, red table lamp. "Y-Yeah Wren?" She stuttered. Naomi's face had gone

pale. "Any reason you just gave this boy another concussion?" I said dryly. "Well what

were you planning to do!" She said defensively. " I certainly wasn't planning on crushing

his skull!" I replied accusingly. Turning back toward the first-aid kit I

continued, "Lets just bind up his arm and decide on what we're going to do next." Naomi

nodded but did not release the lamp. I shrugged my shoulders and started to gently cover

the boy's wound with Neosporin after cleaning away the blood. While Naomi wasn't looking I

also undid the wire bounds keeping his wrists together.  I had just finished wrapping

gauze around the boy's arm when Naomi and I heard the slam of a car door.

I looked up sharply and Naomi raced to the window, dropping the lamp. "Its your

uncle! He's here early and it looks like there are some people with him!" She said

hurriedly. Reacting quickly, I shoved the medicine kit under the couch and stood

up. "Come on Naomi! Help me get him to my room, we'll leave through the window. I don't

want Uncle to see him." Naomi raced back over to us and threw the boy's left arm over her

shoulders. I pulled his right arm around mine and we slowly pulled him off the couch.

Loud and boisterous laughing reached our ears.

The thought that some of Uncle's friends might be drunk flitted through my

mind. "Hurry up! I can hear them near the door!" I said alarmed by the shaking of the

door handle. Naomi struggled to help me drag the boy through the hallway; we both bumped

against the walls and were making such a racket I was shocked that Uncle wasn't yelling

for me to open the door.

We burst into my room, nearly falling over one another as we stumbled to my

window. I quickly kicked my bedroom door shut just as I heard the opening slam of the

front door. I left Naomi struggling to pull the boy through the window as I grasped a red

bag with a long, thick strap that I threw over my shoulder. Hastily, I grabbed some

clothes, a couple books, my pocketknife and my family picture. I shoved them all into my

bag and chucked it out the window before swinging out the opening myself. I had landed on

the soft grass and walked over to Naomi when a sudden thought came to my mind.

"Naomi, I haven't thought of where we're going to go." I said uncertainly. Naomi

glanced at me and sighed in exasperation. "Well then I suppose we can head to my house.

The boy can stay in the shed and I'll just tell mum your staying for a few nights." She

said. I shot her a grateful glance, "That's great Naomi! Unfortunately, I think we're

going to have drag this boy with us." Naomi glanced down at the boy crossly. "When we get

to my home, this guy had better know something about Mrs. Sund's death and that Claves

woman." I smiled and replied, "Well, no use just talking about it, lets get going before

my uncle realizes I'm gone." Naomi nodded in agreement and we both started the long walk

to her house.

It had taken us about twenty minutes to reach Naomi's house, and almost another

ten before we had managed to lock the boy into the shed. We stumbled to house entrance in

exhaustion. It was getting late and the sky had a darkness about it that suggested a

coming rain. It turned out that Naomi's mother, Sherrie was gone at work and wouldn't be

back until the following afternoon. Naomi lived with only her mum now. Her father had

been a researcher like my parents and argued extremely with them about going to the

meeting in the valley. I had never fully understood what the meeting was for, or even

what my parents had been researching; that was the part of their lives that they kept

secret. But I knew that after hearing of my parent's deaths, Naomi's dad had simply left

without a backwards glance toward his home.

Since then, Sherrie had taken up work at the hospital, and Naomi had avoided

mentioning him at all. I shook my head at the thoughts clouding my mind and took in a

deep breath of the warm air in Naomi's house. There was a fresh scent of cinnamon and

everything seemed warm and inviting. Her house had a simple living room with two sofas

and a chair, the walls were a pale tan color, and everything was kept neat and clean. The

kitchen was tiled white with a dark wooden table in the center. On top of the stove sat a

large pan of lasagna that smelled mouthwateringly good.

Naomi grabbed three plates and put a generous helping on each before sitting at the table

and wolfing down her helping. I laughed and grabbed one of the plates along with a

fork. "I'll be right back Naomi, I'm going to put this in the shed for the boy." Naomi

simply nodded and pointed to a cabinet that was in the hallway leading from the kitchen.

I opened the cabinet and looked at the multitude of thick blankets. I chose a plain one,

grabbed the plate and darted outside.

Rain was pouring down without mercy and I used the blanket as a shield while I

unlocked the shed door and ran inside. Thanks to the reinforced roof, it was relatively

dry and warm. The boy was right where we left him, so I put the food down by his side and

unraveled the blanket. I cautiously kneeled beside him and wrapped the blanket around his

shoulders. Slowly, I stood back up and slipped out the shed door, locking it as I left.

When I was once again inside the warm, dry house I quickly ate my food and went

to look for Naomi. I looked around the kitchen and glanced down the hallway, but just

when I was about to give up, I saw her fast asleep in the chair in the living

room. "Jeez, well goodnight Naomi" I muttered jokingly before choosing a couch to lie

down on. Yawning, I turned over on the couch and buried my face into a cushion. I then

fell into a deep dreamless sleep.
